Believing that community involvement is critical to law enforcement, on October 2, 2006, the Travelers Rest Police Department instituted its own Business Watch email program for businesses based within the city limits of Travelers Rest. Following a format perfected by the Greenville Police Department over the last three years, the TRPD sends weekly emails to registered businesses that have submitted an application requesting to be added to an email list. Each week, local business owners receive an accurate “thumbnail sketch” of the major incidents encountered by Travelers Rest officers, in addition to periodic safety tips, traffic task force statistics, and timely alerts and bulletins of in-progress or recent crimes.

Overseeing the Business Watch is Tonya Reeves, the program’s administrator. Tonya, who is also the department’s records administrator, searches through dozens of computer records and officers’ incident reports every week, looking for items that could interest program participants. Business Watch isn’t just a one-way street, however, since program participants are encouraged to contact police investigators with any information that could assist the police in solving or preventing crime in our community. The Police Department has found that by “deputizing” the community’s stakeholders and enlisting their help in fighting crime, Travelers Rest will continue to entice families and businesses to settle in our community.
